The Egyptians, beginning around 4000 BC, used a black makeup called kohl to cover their eyelashes, eyebrows, and outline their eyes. Box sexes exaggerated the almond shape of eyes to ward off the evil eye and possibly the bright desert sunlight. It was very similar to what atheletes do today.
